Post Construction Cleaning: After the Dust Settles

Post Construction Cleaning: After the Dust Settles

After finishing a home improvement project, you’re probably eager to unwind and enjoy your new surroundings. But not so fast. Before you can put your feet up, you must first complete a post-construction cleaning marathon. And yes, it is exactly what it sounds like: a marathon. Your main priority should be to remove all construction dust before it enters your air ducts. Almost every home renovation project produces dust particles, which find their way into every nook and crevice of every room. Don’t let layers of dust turn your newly renovated home into an old and drab environment. Put on a mask and use this handy post-construction checklist to finish off your wonderful new place.

Post Construction Cleaning Checklist

1. Vacuum Carpets & Upholstery

Dust and dirt particles are easily trapped in drapes, upholstered furniture, and carpeted floors. If given time to settle after construction, the consequence might be not only dusty, but also uncomfortable and unpleasant for those who live in the house. Vacuum all soft surfaces completely, paying close attention to minor details. Remove any furniture cushions and vacuum them, as well as the frames beneath them. If there is still dust after the initial round of vacuuming, repeat the operation.

2. Clean all Hard Surfaces

Cleaning surfaces should be done from the top down. Begin by cleaning the dust from your walls – dust collects on your walls throughout construction, believe it or not. Although dry dusting is the ideal method for removing particles without damaging the surface of a wall, a damp cloth can also be used depending on the type of paint or wall covering. Moldings and cabinets are also typical places for dust particles to settle. Dust these areas using a duster. Don’t forget to c lean the interior shelves of all cabinets, paying special attention to hard-to-reach areas. Wipe down the countertops and any other flat surfaces before tackling the dirt and rubbish on or near the floor. Then, sweep any visible dust off your hard floors and mop them from wall to wall.

3. Clean Out Air Vents & Replace Filters

During a significant home renovation project, dust and debris will mix with the air and find their way to your vents. Even if you only remodelled one room, treating the air vents and filters in that area is critical for lowering the quantity of dust that can spread throughout the house. Remove the vent covers from the surrounding walls and ceilings, then wash and thoroughly dry them with soap and warm water. Replace any exposed air filters before replacing the vent covers. Gritty air can aggravate allergies and respiratory difficulties, so don’t skip this step!

4. Don’t Forget About the Minor Details

Clean any other furniture or items in the renovation zone to ensure a completely dust-free living environment. Here’s a list of some of the most commonly overlooked areas:

  • Blades for ceiling fans
  • Light fittings
  • Shades for lamps
  • Electronics
  • Small home appliances
  • Items for decoration
